Featured Charitable Organization

Since 2021, we are asking our participants to make a donation (no matter what size) to this meaningful cause to support housing equity as part of their contest entry requirements. I think we can all recognize that we are privileged to be able to participate in a fun and silly holiday challenge like this. With that in mind, how can we use our privilege to give back?

Our donations this year will be collected right on Instagram! Check out our progress there.

The National Low Income Housing Coalition is dedicated solely to achieving socially just public policy that ensures people with the lowest incomes in the United States have affordable and decent homes.

This year, we’ll have THREE categories for contest entry. We wanted to mix it up and bring in some new options! We hope these categories provide a little something for everyone and encourage new folks to join in.

The O.G.: Your House in Gingerbread

NO. 1

Established in 2020 out of pandemic boredom and a desire to connect with the old house community over some holiday cheer, Rachael asked Instagram to make a gingerbread house with her—a house of their own house. The requirements stay true: (1) It has to be a real house or building, (2) the objective is to model your gingerbread off of this real structure, (3) it has to all be edible, and (4) you have to submit a photo of your reference along with your entry. Check out #thisoldgingerbread for past entries!

NO. 2

Architectural Details

This year, we’re adding two new categories. The first addition is Architectural Details! Do you have gorgeous double-hung wood windows? Does antique bathroom tile inspire you? Or maybe a Greek Revival portico is more your vibe. This category is for architecture nerds and those who want to tackle a smaller-scale gingerbread creation. It still needs to be 100% edible, but this is for a focused element rather than an entire house. Doesn’t have to be an element from your own house, it can be inspired by whatever architectural element is most intriguing to you! (I’m really hoping for some killer ‘stained glass’ windows, someone please go for it.)

Happy to Be Here: Most Spirited

NO. 3

This category is for enthusiastic people who are here for a good time and a good cause, and have no interest in being compared to the more *intense* entries in the OG category. Maybe gingerbread house decorating is a family affair with over-the-top sugary decor. Maybe you have a holiday beverage (or two or three) while decorating. However you want to do it, we want to see your holiday gingerbread spirit come shining through. MAKE A MESS AND HAVE FUN!

CHECK BACK HERE FOR A LINK TO CAST YOUR VOTE AFTER THE DEADLINE FOR ENTRY OF DECEMBER 30th, 2021.

( O N E ) No matter which category you choose to enter, your gingerbread creation needs to be made of edible things.

( T W O ) Please make a donation (any amount you are able to donate, lots of small donations add up!) to NLIHC through our Instagram fundraiser. Instagram covers the processing fees so the full donation goes directly to the organization, and everyone can see our fundraising progress!

( T H R E E ) Make* your gingerbread and post it on Insta! Be sure to note which category you are entering. OG entrants: Don’t forget to include a photo of your reference building in your post — multiple photo posts are welcome! The order doesn’t matter, put your favorite shot first. Tag us (@terramade_ & @1920craftsman) and #thisoldgingerbread to make sure we recieve your entry.

Please reach out to either of us via IG with additional questions. ENTRIES ARE DUE 12/30 AT 11:59 PM EST. We will have a vote for each category following the entry deadline, check back then for details. HAVE FUN!!

*GINGERBREAD HOUSE MUST BE CREATED WITHIN THE CONTEST WINDOW, 12/02/21 TO 12/30/21.

The 2022 winner of each category will receive an adorable felted gingerbread house ornament with a commemorative stamped brass tag noting the year and category championed.

@terramade_

Rachael & Virgil kicked off the inaugural This Old Gingerbread contest last year. They share the (slow) progress of their current top-to-bottom rehab project—a 1923 craftsman bungalow in the midwest—along with a smattering of other random life things: vintage, gardening, drinks, their dog Jovie, etcetera.

@1920craftsman

Brianna & Danny are integral members of the old house community on Instagram. Not only do they (frankly and genuinely) share their home’s architecture and decor, garden projects, baking projects, and restoration projects, but they also use their platform to bring awareness to current social issues and provide resources for impact.
